Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • identify between 15 and 25 plants of special significance within a genus;

  • to research and report on the morphological, taxonomic characteristics, environmental tolerances and horticultural role of the taxa selected, with specific regard to the performance of the species in the context of the Australian landscape;

  • to construct a simple vegetative key for the genus that distinguishes between the described species;

  • to learn a further 125 plants of relevance to ornamental horticulture.

The content includes: The origins of utilisation of the Australian flora, major terrestrial plant communities in Australia, indigenous trees and shrubs, late winter flowering plants, rhododendrons, spring flowering trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, bulbs and climbers.

Assessment

Mid-term (50%); assignment (50%).
