Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the ability of participants to:

  • describe the primary fertilizer elements and practices used to determine a turf fertilizer program;

  • describe nutrient testing for plants and soils;

  • describe fertilizing for turf performance;

  • calibrate granular application equipment;

  • develop a fertilizer schedule;

  • assess the cost and value of fertilizer;

  • collect data on important turf fertilizers;

  • test for soil pH and salinity levels;

  • research and describe the grounds maintenance requirements for specified turf grass areas;

  • discuss the cultural methods of mowing, coring, aeration, top dressing, vertical mowing, rolling and and application equipment, on turf grass growth;

  • describe the environmental issues of scarce water resources, pollution, and loss of natural areas, in turf management.

Content: Major and minor elements required for plant growth, elemental fertilizer analysis, soil testing and its interpretation, cost out a fertilizer, schedule a fertilizer program, calibrate granular application equipment, fertigation, demonstrate and describe cultural processes of mowing, coring, aeration, topdressing, vertical mowing rolling, and application equipment, on turf grass growth, environmental issues relating to the use of scarce water resources, pollution, and loss of natural areas, in turf management.

Assessment

Final examination of 90 minutes (50%), turf grass fertilizer collection (25%), 1 assignment (25%).
