Subject Description

The object of this subject is to develop in the participant an ability to:

  • assess the environmental, aesthetic and functional requirements of a site;

  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of the performance characteristics of, and construction techniques for, current paving materials;

  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of the performance characteristics of concrete; and an ability to design and construct concrete slabs;

  • demonstrate an ability to estimate and cost landscape works;

  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of the use of hand and power tools;

  • describe the various economic and performance characteristics of excavating equipment;

The aesthetic impact of hard surfacing on the overall design of a landscape, soil strength and drainage and their effect on hard surface design and construction, the aesthetic and functional characteristics of a range of contemporary pavement materials, rigid and flexible pavement construction techniques, the performance characteristics of concrete, the design and construction of steel reinforced concrete slabs, costing, scheduling and management of landscape works, the selection and use of hand and power tools, excavation equipment performance, selection and use.

Assessment

Examination (90 minutes) (35%), assignment (30%), practical skills (35%).
