Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • describe the cultural, environmental and technical requirements for successful sexual and asexual propagation of field grown plants;

  • perform specialist techniques of plant propagation, including seed, cuttings, grafting and specialised stems;

  • discuss the methods and treatments used to improve propagation success;

  • describe the properties and evaluate the use of growing mixes and media components.

The content includes: Methods and issues associated with field nursery production, specialist propagation activities including grafting techniques, seed germination techniques, bulbs and other specialised stems, vegetative propagation issues, including plant growth regulators and stock plant management, growing media - materials, design and evaluation.

Assessment

One examination of ninety minutes (40%); two assignments (30% x 2).
