Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • describe and perform appropriate nursery hygiene practices used in a propagation nursery;

  • describe the cultural, environmental and technical requirements for successful sexual and asexual propagation of container grown plants;

  • perform basic techniques of plant propagation, including seed, cuttings, and grafting;

  • explain the principles of microprojection and demonstrate sterile transfer and acclimatisation techniques.

The content includes: Nursery hygiene, techniques and issues associated with propagation by seed, cuttings, grafting, micro propagation and specialised stems; including selection, collection and treatment of suitable plant material, environmental requirements and plant establishment methods.

Assessment

Two examinations of 90 minutes (30% x 2); one assignment (40%).
