Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the ability of participants to:

  • develop and understanding of modern sports turf management;

  • describe the basic turf structure, function and taxonomy of grasses;

  • use appropriate turf grass classification systems;

  • describe the regions of adaptation for turf grasses;

  • describe the cultural, environmental and technical requirements for successful propagation of turf grasses from seed and vegetative material;

  • carry out a maintenance audit on a turf grass facility;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of design in the landscape of parks and gardens;

  • communicate design principles via basic graphical techniques.

The content includes: An overview of the sports turf management industry, turf grass botany and identification and selection characteristics. Propagation, establishment and aftercare of turf grasses and responsibilities of the turf grass manager. An understanding of the landscape design process, principles of design (scale, proportion, balance, unity, perspective). Graphic design and section elevations in practical situations applicable to park and residential design.

Assessment

Examination 90 minutes (30%), practical skills in the field and by assignment (25%), graphic design studio skills (45%).
