Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • understand the criteria applied when selecting trees for planting in a range of environmental conditions;

  • use appropriate design principles to plan the placement of trees in a range of situations;

  • establish trees using a range of planting techniques;

  • successfully transplant trees.

The content includes: Cultural requirements of trees, dimensions, environmental tolerances and advantages and disadvantages of a range of tree species. Using design principles such as scale, form, and colour to determine the placement of trees in the landscape. Establish trees using various techniques, such as direct-seeding, tube-stock and bare-rooted specimens. Move established trees from one site to another.

Assessment

One 90-minute examination (50%); aboricultural practice (20%); assignments (30%).
