Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • correctly identify 200 plants used in Australian environmental horticulture;

  • identify plants for use in difficult sites;

  • identify common weeds;

  • identify exotic and indigenous plants to species level using horticultural or botanical keys;

  • appreciate the value of public and private gardens as horticultural resources.

The content includes: Plant performance in special or extreme environments; plants able to grow in coastal conditions, saline soils, deoxygenated soils, with light exclusion and drought; the Australian genus Acacia; use of botanical and horticultural keys.

Assessment

Three tests of 30 minutes each (80%); 1500 word assignment (20%).
