Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • identify major types of horticultural machinery, equipment and earth moving equipment;

  • describe the principles of operation of selected machines;

  • describe the selection, performance, and management of horticultural and construction machinery;

  • describe the engineering principles in horticultural structures;

  • list the important characteristics of horticultural structures and materials;

  • describe the design and construction requirements for specific horticultural applications.

The content includes: Horticultural machinery, types, construction and principles of operation including tractors, mowers, chain-saws, sprayers, earth moving machinery, engine operation and performance characteristics, field performance and management of machinery including, machinery selection. Horticultural building designs, structural loads and component strengths, construction materials, retaining walls, foundations, pergola and small structural design, concrete slabs, building materials.

Assessment

Examinations, two of 60 minutes (50%), two assignments (1500 words and a structural drawing) (50%).
