Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • describe the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act;

  • describe the requirements of specific legislation relating to the workplace;

  • describe the principles of risk management including hazard identification and control;

  • investigate accidents in the workplace;

  • describe safety procedures for safe machine and equipment operation;

  • describe how to handle, mix and store pesticides;

  • explain the requirements of the Dangerous Goods Act;

  • demonstrate and administer basic first aid assistance, including CPR.

The content includes: The Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation, risk management, accident reporting, machinery and equipment safety, manual handling techniques, noise, pesticide safety, material safety data sheets and relevant safety information, chemical handling, mixing and storage, fire safety, emergency procedures, personal safety equipment, first aid.

Assessment

Examination 90 minutes (60%), assignment 2500 words (40%).
