Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • use a microscope to observe plant cells;

  • identify various types of plant cells;

  • describe the anatomy of various parts of plants;

  • describe the processes of photosynthesis and respiration;

  • describe the processes of meiosis and mitosis;

  • describe some basic biological processes in plants;

  • describe the life cycle of a flowering plant;

  • discuss the effects of various environmental factors on plants;

  • describe various advantageous and deleterious relationships between plants and other organisms;

  • list the important characteristics of the divisions of the plant kingdom;

  • collect and analyse data;

The content includes: The importance of plants; cell structure; leaf, stem and root structure; primary and secondary growth; enzyme action; water uptake and loss; temperature and plant growth; photosynthesis and respiration; soil structure; nutrient cycling; ecology; mitosis and meiosis; genetics; the life cycle of a flowering plant; the plant kingdom; data collection and interpretation.

Assessment

One theory examination of 45 minutes (20%); one theory examination of 90 minutes (50%); two practical examinations of 60 minutes each (15%, 15%).
