Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • describe the components of an irrigation system and methods of irrigation;

  • determine the water required for selected applications;

  • evaluate an irrigation system for a specific horticultural application;

  • select an appropriate irrigation method for horticultural applications;

  • design a small horticultural irrigation system;

  • perform a plane survey of a small horticultural area;

  • use a level to conduct a contour survey;

  • demonstrate the use of levelling equipment for irrigation and drainage.

The content includes: Sources of irrigation water, plant water requirements, irrigation methods, operation and performance principles of surface, subsurface, microspray drip and sprinkler systems, monitoring and control systems, fluid properties, pipe types, sizes and pipe selection, drainage systems and layout, hydraulics, principles of irrigation and drainage system design. Plane surveying, levelling, setting out irrigation systems.

Assessment

Assignments, two examinations of 60 and 90 minutes (60%), assignment of 300 words 40%.
