Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend participants' ability to:

  • describe the processes and characteristics of product deterioration;

  • describe the major export agencies, major trading partners, and export opportunities in horticulture;

  • describe the quarantine requirements and plant standards of Australia;

  • evaluate current transportation methods for moving horticultural crops from export ports to destination markets;

  • recommend techniques for the harvest, preparation, package, and transportation of produce for export;

  • assess the affect of handling of horticultural crops at destination markets.

The content includes: Postharvest benchmarks, the postharvest environment, export opportunities in horticultural produce, export agencies, plant quarantine principles and practices, plant standards and inspection procedures, produce quality assurance, package and package quality, storage and transport methods, product and transit environment, case studies and postharvest and horticultural exporting.

Assessment

One hour examination (50%); assignment of 2000 words (50%).
