Subject Description

On completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • plan and implement effective management information systems and prepare necessary financial reports and loan applications from the financial information system;

  • establish and apply criteria for assessing the financial performance of a farm or small business;

  • implement effective cash planning and working capital management techniques;

  • implement effective financing decisions through an understanding of the various types, sources, costs and conditions attached to short, medium and long term business finance, including off-shore finance;

  • recognise the significance of legislation and controls designed to encourage honest and ethical financial management;

  • effectively communicate financial information to stakeholders.

The content includes: Farm or small business records - physical records. Monitoring financial performance - analysis of physical and financial records and reports to assess farm performance, inter-firm comparisons, taxation implications; management of liquidity and current assets. Financing the business - mathematics of the time value of money; capital budgeting, the finance system and sources of debt finance, finance requirements; applying for a loan; auditing principles; business ethics.

Assessment

Two reports on a financial management simulation (75%). One assignment on a case study (25%).
