Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to develop the students':

  • understanding of the various marketing methods of livestock;

  • livestock marketing skills;

  • skills in the assessment of live animals in relation to carcass quality;

  • understanding of livestock classification according to AUSMEAT and CALM.

The content includes: Marketing Alternatives - Auction, liveweight, over the hooks, contract, CALM, Meatbid, Helmsman; presentation of livestock for sale; sale organisation and cataloguing. Stud Stock Marketing - Auctioneer training; CALM assessor training; AUSMEAT classifications; evaluation of live animals and carcasses.

Assessment

Successful completion of an auctioneers course and a base level CALM assessors course (these are a precondition for the award of a pass grade in this subject). Two assignments of 2000 words (59% each).
