Subject Description | The objective of this subject is to enable students to:
The content includes: legislation regarding the establishment of feedlots, specifically in Victoria and the general concept for Australia; requirements of design and facilities in construction of a feedlot, including the implementation issues ensuring animal welfare is considered; strategies for sourcing foodstuffs and livestock in a feedlot; markets and market specifications for grain fed livestock; strategic alliances in the red meat industries; ruminant nutrition and preparation of appropriate rations to achieve targeted levels of performance; health programs and strategies appropriate to a feedlotting enterprise; product quality and the development of QA programs. |
Assessment | A 4000 word major assignment (40%); workshop exercises (30%); two hour exam (30%). |
