Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable students to:

  • become familiar with legislation regarding feedlot development;

  • understand concepts of feedlot design;

  • become familiar with all aspects of marketing and sourcing feedlot requirements;

  • understand concepts of animal nutrition and health of feedlot animals;

  • discuss concepts of QA programs for feedlot.

The content includes: legislation regarding the establishment of feedlots, specifically in Victoria and the general concept for Australia; requirements of design and facilities in construction of a feedlot, including the implementation issues ensuring animal welfare is considered; strategies for sourcing foodstuffs and livestock in a feedlot; markets and market specifications for grain fed livestock; strategic alliances in the red meat industries; ruminant nutrition and preparation of appropriate rations to achieve targeted levels of performance; health programs and strategies appropriate to a feedlotting enterprise; product quality and the development of QA programs.

Assessment

A 4000 word major assignment (40%); workshop exercises (30%); two hour exam (30%).
