Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend participants' ability to:

  • understand the range of business practices involved in conducting a commercial business;

  • understand the importance of the management aspect in integrating the business practices;

  • write management type reports on the various aspects of a commercial business;

  • determine a businesses attitude to risk and resources available to assist a business to develop or maintain business.

This subject is designed to broadly introduce the business aspects students will meet during Management Practices in Industry. Topics to be studied are: the business environment; organisational management, including the use of mission statements, the effect of size on organisational structure, historical effects on management, growth, staffing and job design; Personnel Management including management styles, promotion, delegation, informal groups at the work place, motivation, staff training, recruitment; Financial Management including financial control, budgets, profitability and economic performance systems used, risk, valuation of inventory; Marketing including use of specialised departments, promotion policies, inventory control, networking; Business location, legal factors affecting the business such as with chemical storage, communication networks. These theoretical aspects will provide the basis for student observation and data collection during Management Practices in Industry.

Assessment

Internal and external students - Management report of 2500 words (100%).
