Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable participants to:

  • appreciate the physical and financial planning aspects of farm/agribusiness management;

  • make decisions on short or longer term management options aided by various analysis methods;

  • appreciating allowance for uncertainty in forward planning;

  • calculate various methods of profitability.

The content includes: the principles of strategic and tactical planning, essential record keeping and office organisation, activity planning and human resource planning. Synthesis of an annual cash flow budget for a farm or agribusiness case study and an overview of other forms of budgeting. Analysis of the financial status of a farm or agribusiness or a management option by using techniques such as gross margins analysis, net present value, internal rate of return, benefit/cost ratio, return on capital investment, return to equity and others. An examination of a range of risk management options appropriate for farming or agribusiness.

Assessment

Three assignments - 2 x 1000 words (2 x 30%), 1 x 200 words (40%).
