Subject Description

The objectives are: identify the fauna and flora which occur in Australian aquatic systems; understand and apply procedures for monitoring water quality; carry out water monitoring project; be aware of the importance of key species in the fisheries industry.

The content includes: radiation and adaptations of different animal and plant groups in freshwater and marine environments; procedures of biomonitoring using benthic macroinvertebrates; methods for assessing water quality; methods for sampling aquatic vertebrate species; the importance of native fish and crustacean species in Australian fisheries. Students will be required to design and carry out a biomonitoring project.

Assessment

Biomonitoring report (40%); written assignment of 2,000 words (30%), written examination (30%).
