Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable the student to:

• develop an understanding of the importance of trees in the landscape;

• develop an understanding of how trees can be integrated into productive farming systems;

• develop skills of tree establishment, management and harvesting;

• observe a number of sites showing aspects of farm forestry;

• develop an understanding of the networks and organisations associated with farm forestry.

The content includes: Landscape revegetation, benefits and use of trees on farms, use of farm plans, design options, economic returns from trees on farms, land preparation, species selection, tree establishment, tree management, pruning and thinning, weed and pest control, harvesting, products, markets and marketing, organisations and networks.

Assessment

Assignment of 3000 words (50%); Fieldwork report of 2000 words (35%), Workshop presentation (15%).
