Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should be aware of the practices of both music therapy in medicine and music in medicine, gain an understanding of how the systematic application of music as been linked with improved medical functioning, and have critically examined the related research.

Topics to be covered include: music and pain control; music and stress reduction; vibroacoustic therapy; music and psychoneuroimmunology; music and physical therapy; music and rehabilitation; performing arts medicine; psychological aspects of music and medicine; music and childbirth.

Assessment

Class presentation (20%); Class participation (20%); 3000-word assignment (60%).
