Two hours per week group instruction; up to 4 hours per week ensemble rehearsal for one semester

Subject Description

On completion of this subject, students a) will be able to demonstrate basic playing, maintenance and tuning techniques on at least one instrument from the brass family and on the standard percussion instruments, and b) will have acquired skills relevant to the advanced performance of improvised music in the school setting, and c) will develop ability to perform sympathetically with other members of the group in ensemble. Students should submit 5 concert reports to the Faculty Office by the last day of semester in the semester in which they take ensemble.

There will be a semester each of group study of brass and percussion techniques; improvisation workshop; ensemble.

Assessment

Improvisation workshop (35%); second instrument (35%); Ensemble (30%).
