A 1 hour aural class and a one hour keyboard class per week

Subject Description

  • development of inner hearing via rhythmic and melodic sight reading exercises from both the textbooks and a broad cross-section of the music repertoire;

  • development of basic keyboard skills via a variety of exercises and repertoire that will enhance harmonic and aural awareness and provide a basis for simple accompaniment skills.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Singing, playing and transcription of stepwise and triadic melodies in major and minor keys;

  • Singing, playing and transcription of basic rhythms using odd time signatures and changing metre;

  • Singing, playing and transcription of simple harmonic progressions;

  • Technical work in major keys, accompaniment patterns, transposition and simple pieces.

Assessment

Exams at the end of semester one and two comprising:

  1. An individual sight-singing and rhythm performance test (40%).

  2. A one-hour aural comprehension examination (40%).

  3. A keyboard examination (20%).

Students must pass all three to pass the subject.
