Subject Description

A basic introduction to legal history and the major elements of liberal legal theory. It examines the origins and development of the Anglo-Australian legal system and its relations with pre-existing indigenous laws. It examines the liberal concepts of responsible government, separation of powers, the rule of law, judicial independence and objectivity, individual rights and the limits of state intervention.

Assessment

A group project presented in class and submitted in writing (1000 words in length) (pass/fail), and a research essay of 3500 words (absolute maximum) to be submitted in the 12th week of semester (100%).
