Subject Description

The scope, opportunities, complexities and responsibilities of urban design; urban design issues, principles and methodology; analytical and design skills for generating and testing alternative approaches to the urban design and development of specific sites; the role of urban design within a given spatial, social, economic and political context. Studio classes address a range of urban design problems, scales and degrees of complexity and comprise one short exercise, a case study/critique, and a major project comprised of a number of consecutive stages including an urban form and image analysis. A series of lectures will introduce students to various problematic aspects of the urban design project work and to basic, formal urban design principles, methodology and practice. Seminar presentations will give students the opportunity to present and discuss the results of their case study field work.

Assessment

Assessment will be progressive and based entirely on course work (exercise, project, and case study) to be submitted during the semester, the whole being equivalent to approximately 6000 words.
