Subject Description | This subject provides an introduction to two major areas of modern physics. In astrophysics, the basic structure of stars, our galaxy and the universe will be discussed, and the most recent research questions will be introduced. Topics include: demographics of the distribution of stars; the structure and evolution of stars; the structure of the Milky Way; an inventory of cosmic objects; cosmological models. In optics, the nature and propagation of light will be explored, and illustrated by applications in modern instruments such as X-ray telescopes and lasers. The content includes: a review of the mathematics of wave motion; electromagnetic waves; propagation of light; geometrical optics; wave optics, interference; diffraction. |
Assessment | A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination plus tests and/or assignments, set during the semester, which may account for up to 20% of the final marks. |
