Subject Description

Topics covered in the subject include, but are not limited to: management decision making overview, decision making and managerial behaviour, history and evolution of management support systems (management information systems, decision support systems, executive information systems and data warehousing), decision support systems (including design, architecture, typical applications, modelling, forecasting and group decision support), executive information systems (including design, architecture, multi-dimensional data models and on-line analytical processing), data warehousing (architecture, multi-dimensional modelling and schema design, data mining and data quality).

At the completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • Understand how managers work;

  • Understand how decisions are made;

  • Understand and evaluate the types of managerial support systems;

  • Compare and contrast the techniques used to build managerial support systems.

Assessment

A 2 hour end of semester exam and assigned project work expected to average up to 4 hours per week. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
