Subject Description

This is an introductory subject in which the student will examine the principles that underlie the practices and that assist the management of strategy, systems, structure and people in the modern workplace. The course will be evaluative rather than prescriptive in nature as well as having a strong international comparative leaning. Topics covered will include ethics, strategy, planning, control, power, organisational culture, leadership, conflict, dispute resolution, motivation, communication, workplace change, discrimination, flexibility and globalisation.

At the completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• define the tasks and roles of the manager in achieving the objectives of an organisation;

• identify the key factors in the external and internal environment that affect the management of an organisation;

• describe the systems and structures that are constructed to achieve the objectives of the organisation;

• identify the major factors that affect employee behaviour;

• critically assess the means by which organisations manage employee relations;

• analyse the issues involved in a selection of important theoretical and practical debates in the management literature.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (70%) and an essay of up to 2000 words (30%).
