HECS Band | 2 |
Coordinator | Dr C. G. Young |
Prerequisites | One of Chemistry 610-141 or 610-161 AND one of 610-142 or 610-162. |
Semester | 2 (view timetable) |
Contact | 24 lectures (3 per week for 8 weeks), 8 tutorials, 30 hours practical work |
Subject Description | Upon completion of 610-240 students should comprehend: the nature of the main group and transition metal elements; bonding in inorganic compounds (main group, electron deficient, coordination, and metal-metal bonded species); structural and spectroscopic techniques; important inorganic reactions, including redox, organometallic and catalytic processes; aspects of descriptive inorganic chemistry. Students should also have developed: skills to synthesize simple inorganic molecules; an understanding of the basic analytical and spectroscopic methods; skills to interpret and record observed chemistry. Students should also appreciate the importance of rational, critical and independent thought in chemical science and in the understanding of inorganic chemistry. The subject covers the topics: main group chemistry; properties and reactions of non-metal compounds; bonding in polyatomic molecules; metal chemistry; properties and reactions of metal compounds, coordination complexes and organometallic species; electrochemistry and energetics; magnetism; metal-metal bonding; descriptive inorganic chemistry; catalysis. The practical component of the course will consist of a number of experiments involving the synthesis and/or chemical and/or instrumental investigations of important classes of main group and transition metal coordination and organometallic compounds. |
Assessment | One 2-hour written examination at the end of semester. Practical work will be continuously assessed in the form of short reports. Practical work must be completed satisfactorily before credit can be granted for the subject. |
