Prerequisites

521-211 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Part A; and one of 652-214 Principles of Genetics; or 526-201 Principles of Microbiology and Immunology; or 606-205 Cell Biology I; or 521-221 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Lab Part A and 521-222 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Lab Part B (521-222 would be taken concurrently with 600-205).

24 lectures and 24 hours of other activities (Assignments; e.g.. researching Intellectual Property protection for a product, computer searches of patent databases, developing a business plan, preparing case studies)

Subject Description

This subject will enable students to develop skills relevant to the Australian biotechnology industry. It will be a core subject for all Biotechnology co-major students and taught by staff from several departments and by guest lecturers from local biotechnology companies. Topics include: Background to biotechnology; Brief history of the Biotechnology Revolution; Human genome project; Products and processes in biotechnology; Protecting ideas: Intellectual Property Management; Patents, Trade Secrets, Plant Breeders Rights, Licensing; Funding of biotechnology and commercialisation; Business planning, management skills; Public attitudes towards genetic engineering e.g.. genetically modified food; Bioethics and regulatory issues. The steps involved in taking a product from the research laboratory to the marketplace will be illustrated by examples including cotton with insecticidal genes (an agricultural product); GMCSF (granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor) (a health product); antibiotic production (a process).

Assessment

End of semester 2-hour exam (70%), two written assignments (30%).
