536-301 Systems Physiology Part A | |
Note | 536-301 and 536-311 form a sequence of study. In Semester 1 the time slot allocated for practical Physiology is shared between Physiology 536-301 and 536-302 Mammalian Cellular Physiology. |
Credit Points | 12.5 |
HECS Band | 2 |
Coordinator | Dr David Williams |
Prerequisites | Physiology 536-201, 536-211, and 536-202. The Head of the Department will consider exemptions for students who passed 536-201 and 536-211. |
Semester | 1 (view timetable) |
Contact | 22 lectures, 12 hours practical work, 12 hours computer aided learning, 24 hours assignment |
Subject Description | Systems Physiology will enable students to comprehend how the organ systems integrate with neural and hormonal systems to maintain normal body functions. Emphasis is placed on using teaching formats to develop theoretical and communication skills to investigate physiological processes. Content will include: Cell-cell signalling, receptor mediated signalling, local control of the vasculature, control of kidney function, and maintenance of blood fluid and electrolyte balance. The practical component is designed to develop skills of experimentation including experimental design, experimentation and data collection, data analysis, culminating in manuscript preparation and scientific writing. The assignment requires a report analysing the theoretical basis of a chosen physiological principle. The practical work is taken at the same time as practical work for 536-302 Mammalian Cellular Physiology and the timetable is arranged to enable students to take both classes. |
Assessment | A 2 hour end of semester exam, a laboratory report of not more than 2000 words in manuscript format as indicated in the handout, and a written assignment of not more than 6 pages. Students must obtain a satisfactory standard in the laboratory report to be eligible for the final exam. |
