Subject Description

This subject will examine personal and social development in its social and cultural contexts (e.g. family, school, work, community). A range of theoretical perspectives on personal and social development will be considered including sociogenetic, dialectical, transactional and psychosocial models. Analysis will be made of methodological problems involved in the study of development. Attention will be focused on issues of change and stability within persons, variability between persons, interpersonal relationships, and person-culture exchanges. Topics to be covered include: developmental tasks; relationships with parents, children and peers; development of self and identity; transition points, and rites of passage; processes leading to emotional and behavioural adjustment and maladjustment; development in specific cultural contexts (e.g. indigenous, migrant, Anglo-Australian).

Assessment

A combination of laboratory report and examination, with the laboratory report being weighted at least 40% of the total assessment.
