Subject Description

This subject comprises completing one compulsory unit and one of six optional units:

Introduction to Applied Psychology

This compulsory unit provides general perspectives of applied research and professional work relevant to all specific areas of applied psychology; this includes methodological, epistemological and ethical issues.

Human Neuropsychology

Covers the theory and practice of human neuropsychology including: clinical and psychometric approaches to neuropsychological assessment; common neuropsychological syndromes.

Health Psychology

Examines the relationship between health status and behaviour; beliefs regarding health; determinants of risk behaviours; health promotion; obesity; disordered eating; health and stress management; coping with pain and illness; the nature of grief and bereavement.

Environmental Psychology

Introduces the theoretical concepts, relevant substantive issues and empirical search methods of environmental psychology, a discipline dealing with the interrelationships between human behaviour and the physical and natural environment.

Industrial and Organisational Psychology

Focuses on the application of theory and methods in the psychology of work; the theme being 'performance'. Topics include motivation, selection, training and stress.

Introduction to Sport Psychology

Examines our understanding of the physical and mental skills displayed by elite performers, and describes methods for enhancing the performance of these skills.

Psychopathology

Includes an investigation of various models of psychopathology and their personal/social implications with emphasis on a phenomenological framework.

Assessment

A combination of laboratory reports and examinations, with the laboratory reports being weighted at least 40% of the total assessment.
