Subject Description

This subject comprises three units: Personality; Social Cognition; and Social Constructions of Self. In each area both historical and contemporary perspectives will be reviewed.

Personality

Provides an introduction to theory and research in personality, with particular reference to structural approaches, assessment of personality, and biological basis of personality.

Social Cognition

Provides an introduction to theory and research in social cognition. Topics may include: cognitive dissonance; attitude-behaviour consistency; self-perception and attribution.

Social Constructions of Self

Provides an introduction to current theory and research examining the nature and structure of self knowledge, with particular reference to social identity and self categorisation, and self regulatory models.

Assessment

A combination of laboratory reports and examinations, with the laboratory reports being weighted at least 40% of the total assessment.
