Subject Description

Learning theory in VET 1 includes an examination of Kolb's learning cycle; experiential learning (Dewey) and reflective practice. It includes developing skills of conceptualising learning in linear and non-linear ways, mindmapping and the complexity of the human brain including lateralisation theory. An analysis of intuition, memory, consciousness, the concept of thinking. In general this subject explores how adults learn (andragogic theory) particularly in VET contexts. Fuller's theory of learning is examined. Action learning and group learning are examined along with associated concepts such as power in groups. Personal identity and narrative identity. Transformational learning (Mezirow). Issues of diversity in learning and an examination of equality in relation to learning. Barriers to learning, transactional analysis. Some skills in reflective writing and using the Internet for research (i.e. as a means of learning) will be covered.

Assessment

Essays, assignments and/or class presentation equivalent to 4000 words.
