Subject Description | This subject examines the critical issues and debates surrounding responsibility for children during the early childhood years. It analyses the changing conceptions of the functions and roles of the early childhood professional and how these intersect with parental and societal responsibilities for children and families. Particular focus is given to laws, regulations, codes of practice, ethical codes, and government and non-government policy statements that define and influence the profession. The role of the early childhood professional in self-regulation will also be explored. Topics will include: United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, codes of ethics, procedures for quality assurance in children's services including national standards, state regulations and accreditation processes, legislation for child protection and mandatory reporting of child abuse, legislation and issues relating to the care of sick children. |
Assessment | An assignment of 2000 words and a 2-hour written examination. |
