Subject Description

This subject reviews ecological principles and factors in the planning process and information required to assess the impact of projects on the environment. The subject provides a bridge between the geomatics and environmental science disciplines. It includes a review of some key ecological principles and factors, their relevance to the land use and planning process, and techniques for their assessment. Application areas include geology, geomorphology, soils, hydrology (including rivers and wetlands) and a range of vegetation types development. Included will be a consideration of climate and introductions to visual quality, and cultural and heritage issues. Brief examination of the evolution of assessment techniques and a review of current, pertinent environmental legislation is also included.

Assessment

Not more than three hours of written examinations and tests, and not more than the equivalent of 20 pages of written assignments and reports on practical work. The relative weighting of the assessment components will be published at the commencement of the subject.
