Subject Description | Upon completion students should have: developed understanding of the relevance of systems theory to non mechanistic processes and appreciate the common features of a wide range of systems in industry; gained experience with systems control methods and hardware applied in several case studies. Topics covered include: systems theory: abstract, dynamical and control systems, hierarchical/multilevel systems, consistency and coordination, adaptivity and learning. Systems modelling: equivalence, decomposition, simplification. Technical problems and solution strategies: Inventory control, production planning and industrial management. Programmable logic and microprocessor control systems. |
Assessment | One three-hour examination; assignments to a maximum of 5000 words or equivalent. Students will be notified of the weighting of assessment components at the beginning of semester. |
