Subject Description

Students completing this subject should: have developed skills in performing circuit analysis on simple linear electrical networks; understand elementary physical electronics; have gained an appreciation of the importance of a systems approach to Electrical Engineering.

The content covers: electrical networks; linear d.c. networks, Kirchoff's laws, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, superposition, simple non-linear elements, 1st order transient, a.c. sinusoidal steady state networks, phasor diagrams. Electronics: elementary physical electronics, diode circuit-analysis, switches and amplifiers, operational amplifiers, feedback.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three hours; practice classes, tests, laboratory reports and notebooks, assignments, tutorial attendance and project reports. Students will be notified of the weighting of assessment components at the beginning of the semester.
