Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to give students a knowledge of how to determine the integrand so as to extremise the integral and how to integrate functions without determining the anti-derivative.

Topics covered include:

Part 1 Advanced Equations: Delayed equations, difference equations, functional equations, integral equations of Fredholm and Volterra types, chaotic systems of equations.

Part 2 Perturbation Methods: Regular perturbations, the two types of singular perturbations, asymptotic behaviour for both boundary layers and long times.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three hours. Plus additional tests and assignments to a maximum value of 10%.
