Subject Description | The objective of this subject is to give students a working knowledge of a wide variety of equation types and the methods of solving them with special emphasis on perturbation methods. Topics covered include: Part 1 Calculus of Variations: Euler's equation, integral and algebraic constraints, Sturm-Liouville problems, Ritz method, numerical methods, adjoint problems. Part 2 Advanced Complex Analysis: Series expansions, residues, contour integration. Asymptotic methods, stationary phase, steepest descent, WKB theory. |
Assessment | One written examination not exceeding three hours. Plus additional tests and assignments to a maximum value of 10%. |
