Subject Description | Students completing this unit will understand how to make simplifications to complex siol conditions such as the strength/deformation characteristics of the soil can be established and applied to problems involving the stability of an earth/rock mass. Topics covered include: Stability of slopes, the difference in performance of excavations and embankments; earth retaining structures - rigid and flexible walls, effects of wall friction, short and long-term conditions; Foundation Engineering including effects of inclined and eccentric loads. |
Assessment | One written examination not exceeding three hours (80%), together with an assignment of not more than 3000 words (20%). |
