Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week

Subject Description

Origins and impact of the recent economic crisis in South-East Asia, the preceeding era of high growth and Australia's involvement in the region. The main focus will be upon Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Topics will include industrialisation and trade; labour force, industrial relations and education; financial liberalisation and foreign investment; urbanisation and the middle class; overseas Chinese and indigenous entrepreneurship; the developmental state; culture and business environment; and the Australian relationship with South-East Asia.

Assessment

Tutorial participation, essay and outline totalling no more than 3000 words (50%) and a 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50%).
