Subject Description | This course provides those students who wish to specialise in animal science subjects with a detailed understanding of the production systems used in intensive animal agriculture. The course includes analysis of the following key issues in intensive livestock production systems: (1) the size, distribution & value of the pig, poultry & other intensive animal industries, (2) breed selection & genetic improvement, (3) practical feeding of breeding & growing animals, (4) optimisation of reproductive output, (5) environmental effects & the use of buildings, (6).management regimes to maintain animal health, (7) maximisation of product output & quality, (8) production system analysis & consideration of alternatives and (9) marketing & markets. On completion of this subject students should be aware of all the significant inputs & products of intensive animal production systems, those factors that determine product quality and the effects of changes in the inputs/outputs on the efficiency of the production system. They should be capable of the detailed analysis of a production system. They should also be aware of the ethical issues associated with intensive animal production systems and the alternative production systems available for pigs and poultry. |
