Subject Description

This subject is an examination of theoretical and empirical studies of decision making in criminal justice; the idea of discretion and the control of discretionary judgements; and an introduction to techniques appropriate to the study of decision making. Students who complete the subject should understand the major criminological studies of decision making and be able to apply these studies to the operation of the criminal justice system.

Assessment

An essay of 2000 words for 3rd year, 3000 words for 4th year, and a 2-hour exam or take-home exam equivalent to 2000 words.
