Subject Description

The subject involves a critical appraisal of the medical and legal profession with special reference to the writings of Michael Foucault, Stanley Cohen and Nikolas Rose in relation to the place of psychiatry in modern society. The response of the various arms of the criminal justice system to the needs of the mentally ill and intellectually disabled will be a dominant theme and aspects of gender and ethnicity will be considered.
