Subject Description

This subject examines the contemporary roles, status and forms of English(es) in the world, including: the general causes and effects of the global spread of English, an examination of the status and divergent forms of the many new Englishes, an exploration of the effects of the spread of English, and an overview of attempts to resist such effects. Students who complete the subject should: have gained a broad understanding of the current position of English(es) in the world; have an appreciation of the diversity of Englishes and the implications of standardisation; have an awareness of the cultural and political implications of the current position of English.
