Two 1-hour lectures and a tutorial per week. There will be no tutorials in either the first or the sixth week of semester

Subject Description

This subject is a detailed examination of the major elements of English grammar using principles of linguistic analysis. Students should learn to identify and describe the main morphological and syntactic constructions in English including parts of speech; basic sentence structure; tense, aspect, and mood; clause type; negation; complex sentences; thematic systems; the relations between sentences in discourse; and ellipsis and coordination.

Assessment

Three assignments totalling 2000 words, and a 2-hour examination.
