Subject Description

The subject provides a critical overview of the structure and organisation of work and of managerial practice in an era of globalisation, focusing on major contemporary issues such as: the social organisation of work and of the workplace; managerial practices in the firm; and transformations in work related organisations. Students will investigate specific topics including the division of labour within the workplace; workplace restructuring; the emergence of new management techniques and employment practices; and the influence of globalisation and technology. The subject should equip students with the ability to assess critically the work of key theorists of work and management. Students will have the opportunity to explore a topic of interest in an empirically based research paper, which may include a case study of a specific workplace or firm.
