Subject Description

The object of the subject is to think about Third World futures - how we might approach them and how others have. This involves a reading of postcolonial and globalisation theories and enquiring into their assumptions and silences. We will then focus on particular issues and questions which stand as topics in their own right, but also reflect back on the three key discourses. Cases in point are modernity, hybridity and agency. Attention will also be paid to the need to negotiate between different knowledge formations. Students who complete this subject should be able to: interrogate postcolonial theory and assess its utility; evaluate alternative conceptions of Third World futures.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
